1940'S
The early 1940’s were defined by World War II. The decade was also known for the
Great Depression. 40% percent of all Americans were considered below poverty
level. Ten Million men were drafted into the war and because of this women were
called out to the working force. This also made the U.S. stop production on
consumer goods and focus on war materials. After the war ended in 1945, the
economic status for Americans changed. Many feared a depression would start
again due to all the unemployed soldiers coming home from the war. The
depression did not come back but many Americans were still worried. Many saved thousands of dollars and used the money to purchase new homes, cars and home
appliances. Marriage rates went up and so did baby making. All the marriages and the norm of the American family lead to the famous baby boom that still affects Americans today. The 1940's also changed life for African Americans. In 1941 President Roosevelt banned racial discrimination in defense production. Changes in the 1940's lead the way of the future civil right movements (American Decades).
